SUBJECT: # 23353: Bearing Carrier Puller - How to use?
Submitted by

Can someone tell me how a "bearing carrier puller" is suppose to work? Like the one I see here: http://www.precisionmfgsales.com/marinetools.htm
please.
Thanks,
Dan
P.S. (Using it to remove a propshaft)

To remove the bearing carrier the first thing you need to do is to remove the prop. Then remove the bolts that hold the carrier in. The take your tool and place the center bolt on the end of the prop shaft and the two grabbers down in the lower unit until the grab the spokes of the carrier. Tighten the center bolt and it should pull the carrier out of the lower unit. I made a puller for next to nothing so if you want to know how let me know.

Sure! Let me know how you made it. Must be different then what I'm thinking because the bearing housing is what needs to be pulled out along with the prop shaft (they are suppose to be removed at the same time - they come out together)... so I'm pretty lost here.
Thanks.

Since you made a carrier puller ,did you make some kind of rig for putting test on LU with air pressure

When I pulled my carrier the prop shaft stayed in. From what
I know you have to have a special tool to remove the prop shaft.
My carrier slid out over the prop shaft. What I did was to
take a 6" piece of flat steel and drill two holes about 4" apart
on the center line. The I took two 12" pieces of 1/4 all thread
rod and bent hooks on each piece. I then slide the rod through
the holes in the flat steel and put nuts on them. After I hooked
the carrier I would tighted each nut until the carrier came out.
I would tighten one then the other until it came out. I would
think yours is the same way. How else could you disconnect
it from inside??? Let me know if you need more.
It was tight getting it out, lots of carbon and other junk between the carrier
and the housing. After I cleaned it up it slide back in easily.
I was trying to replace the lower unit seals.

Yeah, on this one (Volvo 275) the shaft and bearing housing comes out as one piece - for certain.

I never even asked what Volvo I/O were you working on?
Thanks.

Maybe you can modify my design by bending the sides to make a
square horseshoe that will stand on the edges of the housing
and still let everything slide out. Instead of having a center
bolt use the edge of the housing. Just a thought. Have you
asked a volvo marine mechanic how they get them out. Most mechanics
I know will tell you what to do???

Dan (67.80.113.191) from NEW YORK says Oh yeah...
I've asked a bunch of them - believe me! Most answer ohhh, just use a slide hammer and beat the heck out of it. And then you've got the "heat it" and then smack the heck out of it with the slide hammer (as well as soak the heck out of it with PB) -- Needless to say... not the answer. The long and the short of it is that I've tried a 3, 5, 7, and 15 slide hammer -- nothing, no how.
I think the puller method you talk about it the right track to be on. I brought it over to a machine shop, figure it's Monday -- I'll have him take a look at it.

I tried a bearing puller on mine - ended up breaking off some spokes off the carrier. To get it out, I had to put pressure on the carrier using the puller, then apply moderate heat to the lower unit housing and lightly tap around the lower unit until the carrier "popped" forward a little. Then the puller was able to pull the carrier free. My shaft remained and my repair manual had seperate directions for removing the drive shaft.

All you need is a reg., bike pump with a gauge and a fitting to screw into the lowerunit. for vacuum you need a manuel vacuum pump and a vacuum gauge. I'd like to make one myself I just need to find the vacuum gauge.
