SUBJECT: # 24226: Trouble starting

Submitted by Mike (199.10.247.197) from FLORIDA on 8/20/2002 9:48:00 AM

1997 Force 120 by Mercury. The last few trips out if the boat had been sitting for a while it would turn over extremely weak (like it was a weak battery barely turning the motor) After it sat for a little while it would start right up and run all day long. I had to hook up my portable jump pack a couple of the times but the other times it just cranked with full power after a couple minutes of sitting. I tried to start it in the driveway saturday before heading out and nothing. Battery pack didnt help and neither did jumping it with the car. The starter motor was very hot to the touch and I noticed smoke out of it after a while so I stopped. I also noticed that the propeller was turning slightly as I attempted to turn it over. I have the shop manual but would really like help on where to start. Thanks!

Either the motor is staying in gear and thats putting too much strain on the starter or the starter is going bad. If it is hot when your trying to crank it I would say the starter is bad. You should be able to have the starter rebuilt by any electric motor repair shop. It will alot cheaper than having to buy a new one. I would try that first.

my friend has a 120 force and wound up smoking his starter. his primary wire to the starter came loose. so if it can come loosed there it can come loose in other places as well.also if you have those wing nuts on your battery, throw them away and get some stainless nylock nuts. that way when you tighten it down she won't come loose.
