SUBJECT: # 25070: bottom painting

Submitted by Stan (63.185.224.56) from NEW JERSEY on 3/9/03 7:12:00 PM

28 foot fiberglass boat kept in saltwater from April thru December. Was bottom painted last year. Is it really necessary to paint it every year? If not, how do you know that it is time to paint it? Do you have to sand before repainting if so, sand it all off or just to rough it up some for good adherence. What kind of paint is the best to use. Any and all help and comments will be appreicated.

I use this method. First coat - black, hard paint -Petit brand. Scuff lightly with scotchbrite pad. Second coat and third coat - Teal - ablative paint - Petit brand.

The idea here is, as the ablative wears away, the black undercoat will show, but still provide anti-fouling protection. When and where you see black, you scuff with scotchbrite pad and re-apply the ablative paint. This also prevents layer upon layer of "old" paint.

    Stan,

I've done Scott's method before and did fine but now I just use epoxy paint and can get 2-3 seasons from it. I touch up any bad spots and the water line before putting her in for the season. Leaving it on the trailer may degrade the effectiveness a little but I'm still getting the 2-3 seasons protection.

    Good luck!

Stan, what type of paint was used last year? You want to know how much cuprous oxide is in the paint, more the better. My 17' Whaler, I let it go 3 seasons in the Jersey salt, no touchups, as there was a buildup of paint on there. Paint was Petit Trinidad. My 27'er, I painted last year with Trinidad SR, and will only touch up areas where it sloughed off. Got the idea from Dunk, and it makes sense, how does copper 'go bad' from being on the hard?

Their annual bottom paint report comes out in the April issue. Both Interlux and Trinidad rate very well. The publication is the best that I have ever found when it comes to rating boats and products and has steered me in the right direction numerous times. In fact, I have saved every issue for the last 10 years! Just my $.02 worth...
