SUBJECT: # 25739: Shift Cable Problems

Submitted by cmm (64.205.79.67) from MASSACHUSETTS on 7/14/03 11:52:00 AM

I have a '00 200hp Suzuki. Last night when i was dacking up to the mooring the motor would not shift from forward. I put it in reverse and gave it a little throttle but it just accelerated in forward. I was getting dark so I didn't look at it. Is this a common problem? Should I look at the motor end of the cables or take the controls apart? Thank you in adance

..things mechanically for now. Look at your linkages (there are plastic fittings on the ends of the little shift rods that sometimes break or just pop off the ball) and the top of the shift rod. Also tilt the motor way up and check the bottom of the shift rod for the presence of a pin and cotterpin in case it was disconnected for some reason and the pin worked its way out.

Or you may just be up for an adjustment.

Hope it is something as simple as these things.

Disconnect the shift cable where it attaches to the lower unit shift lever. Then, try to shift the motor at the lower unit lever without the cable attached. If it goes in an out of forward, reverse and neural its the cable or (dash) control unit. At least you have it diagnosed that far.
