SUBJECT: # 25740: Prop for 24' Sea Ray Laguna W/A with single 225 Optimax

Submitted by Johnboat (64.246.9.106) from TEXAS on 7/14/03 6:41:00 PM

I went out with a friend who has this rig. He is unhappy with the prop's performance. Loaded for an offshore trip with 4 men, at 5000 rpm we got less than 18 mph. This is a pretty heavy boat for a single 225. I told him someone on this board might have experience with this particular boat or a general recommendation for a heavy boat/single outboard. Thanks.

I have a 23' Boston Whaler Conquest and had a problem getting the boat up and planning quick enough. My top end speed wasn't quite as bad though. The best thing I could find was a 4 blade made by PowerTech here in Shreveport. I now have a new 295 Whaler w/twin 225 Opti's and plan to put the same props on her as well. Call PowerTech (318)688-1970 and ask for Bill Leonard. Tell him I said to call. Bill Hogg (hogue)

I have a friend who has this boat with twin 115s. He turns 16" pitch props. At 5000 RPM he is doing about 32 MPH, 4 guys and full tanks.

I would figure the opti would do better than 1990 merc 115s. It is a big boat for a single, but he should be doing alot better than 18 MPH at 5000 RPM. Do you know what prop he has on it now?

He either has a tremendous amount of slip, or has spun the hub.

The Merc Mirage Plus works good for big heavy boats, lots of diameter and blade area. You probably need a 15 inch, or maybe 17". I had a smaller Laguna with single engine and had losts of problems with the prop ventilating. Lowered the engine a notch and moving the fishfinder transducer far away from the centerline finally fixed the problems. BillS
