SUBJECT: # 26664: Transport vs. J&H vs. Destiny and 2 stroke vs 4

Submitted by dm from Cape Carancahua (24.162.41.216) from TEXAS on 6/11/04 10:59:00 PM

I have been looking at 3 boats seriouly now for several months, but cannot really decide which is better. All 3 (transport cathedral hull, J&H performance, and Destiny) seem to have pros and cons. If anyone owns any of these 3 boats in the 21-22 foot range and has a strong opionion (positve or negative), please post your experience along with the power you choose. I would be very thankful for any help or input. I fish the Cape Carancahua area (red fish lake which is fairly shallow) but also like to cross West Matagorda and head to the south shore line with out being beat to death.

The power is a big concern for me. I spoke directly with the owner on J&H (very helpful) and he tells me that nothing other than 2 stroke hole shot is going to give really good shallow water take off and better performance. On the other hand, I have spoke directly with Mr. Tran and he loves the 4 strokes. He runs a 140 suzuki on the 22 and says it works fine and has great gas milege. I want a boat that performs well, but does not cost an arm and leg to take the family fishing on the weekends. If you believe the adds the manufactures have, they would have you believe that their 2 strokes with new EFI is almost as full effieient as their 4 strokes, but if you read the 4 stroke adds, they tell you how much better the 4 strokes are than 2.

What ever boat I buy this time, I want it to be a boat I am going to be happy with for 10 years (wife not likely let me buy another boat ;-) )

Confused about what boat and what power.

We have a 1999 model TranSport 22' SE with a Yam 150 TRP. We also fish the Lower Laguna Madre out of Port Mansfield and just got back from a weeks fishing trip. The storms early in the week gave us a good test of handling some heavy chop and the boat's performance was excellent. It is a compromise between very skinny running and being able to handle big swells in the open bay. This model is low profile and designed for both wade and drift fishing. With family consderations you might want to look at higher profile models. The TranSport line of boats are becoming more known and popular along the Coast. I saw quite a few for the first time in PM last week. Tran builds a quality boat and you can customize it to a certain extent. Good luck with your decision.

Guys I was in Rockport wading up shallow for some reds when this boat (22 Transport with Yam TRP) comes around the corner off the intracoastal and runs between me and the shoreline in water that would barely float my topwater! I was no more than 2 casts off the sand! Several thoughts came to mind: 1- I can not believe this @#$%^!, 2- He is obviously lost! 3- He may have gone this way before, but doesn't realize it is low tide! 4- there must be a cut up there I can't see! So I waded on up there to see for myself. There was no cut and no prop scar! He was struggling a bit in that 3-4" water but never stopped, just kept going hugging the edge, then shot out after running behind 5-6 waders. After the shock of someone so rude wore off, I was amazed at the performance I had witnessed. That TRP is likw 4WD for a boat! I would never believe a prop boat could run that water if I had not seen it myself, and I saw it up close... too close as well!
