SUBJECT: # 26788: how to keep weeds off cooling intake?

Submitted by beachblitz (205.148.50.200) from NEW JERSEY on 8/3/04 4:48:00 PM

The bay is thick with weeds and it seems impossible to avoid them. I had to stop three times for overheating last time out. Found weeds twice and nothing third time. Waited a minute and restarted with no alarm or light. Water pump and t'stats are new this season on the '99 150hp Johnson and I get a solid stream. Pulled the t'stats and they're clean. So I conclude the alarm is due to weed blockage. Anybody have any ideas how to keep the weed off the motor?

Leading edge of the gearcase till it's like a razor..just cut them all in half.. just kidding.. Well there really is noway to keep the gearcase from snagging weeds. Usually when you do run through some weeds it creates an air pocket around the gearcase and will deflect water away from the intakes. This also creates an exhaust noise. You should lean to listen for that and slow down and reverse it before the engine overheats.

Keeping the leading edge of the gearcase clean, smooth and painted will help allot of the weeds slide off..

Don't matter where I fish, I still have to run the 10 miles up Barnegat Bay to get home. The afternoon (the only time I have this problem) conditions are usually bad enough (tightly packed, steep 2'+ confused seas) that I'm constantly altering speed, trim, direction, etc. from plowing and rolling and looking for a better ride. Listening for a change in exhaust pitch doesn't sound feasible. I've heard the change from hitting thick mats and cleared that, but this seems more a problem of gradual build up. I'm gonna point the pisser higher and try to watch in the rearview mirror. Otherwise, I'll start checking into a pressure guage.

I'm beginning to hate that bay on the weekends.

What do they do on those flats boats for this problem? Is it avoided with the low pick-up units?

We have had this problem occasionally where we fish in very shallow water areas. Our Yam 150 has a low water intake and with our modified tunnel has tended to accumulate grass particles into the intake openings. We have a jackplate and are able to adjust the verticle height of the engine as well as the tilt & trim and this seems to help the problem quite a bit. I would also recommend a water pressure gauge because this will give you a quicker reading of restricted intake and loss of water pressure.
