SUBJECT: # 26794: Bolts stuck in head

Submitted by waterspout from TEXAS on 8/5/04 9:52:00 AM

I took the head covers off my boat to clean the salt build up out and replace gaskets. While doing this a couple of bolts snapped but have a small stud still sticking out from the head...... How should I go about getting these out? Heat and vise grips? Machine shop? any release agent that might work.

Most likely heat will be your cure. An acetylene torch and some JB Blaster penetrating oil, get it hot and tap it with a chisle or Vise-Grips if there's enough to get ahold of. Then you'll probably need to run a tap back through the hole to clean up the threads. Use some teflon grease or anti-seize on the new bolts so you don't have the problem next time. A regular propane torch usually won't get hot enough to do the trick, that's why I say Acetylene torch.

it with just some good vise grips. Behind those head cover plates were full of salt and I rinse the motor after every use. For $6 bucks for gaskets I thinkI'll do this once a year from now on. Thanks
