SUBJECT: # 26867: Rock Guardin'

I have a 90 merc that loves rocks. If there is a rock in the river, it'll find it. Is there any way to protect it, while I still have a little skeg left? Would a jack plate be a good idea? I had a fella tell me I could run with just one blade in the water if I had a jack plate (he wasn't trying to sell me one) but I don't know. I already went to an aluminum prop to prevent shaft damage. Also, does anybody make a poling platform for an aluminum boat? Thanks, Rick

You might want to look into a stainless steel skeg guard.

A jack plate will allow raising the motor, but then you need to be concerned about keeping the cooling intake in the water. Addition of a jack plate is usually accompanied by a special lower unit housing that allows for low water pickup. If it's an unavoidable problem, maybe a jet drive lower unit is your answer.

Have you considered replacing your lower unit with a jet drive? You will lose performance, garaunteed. However, you will also gain the ability to run in about 1 foot (maybe less) of water. With a jet drive about your only limitation is how shallow can you go with the boat itself.
I have no idea how much they cost, but it's worth looking into if you hit submerged objects that often.
