SUBJECT: # 26868: Carb Trouble?

Submitted by eric (209.215.39.36) from SOUTH CAROLINA on 9/7/04 9:11:00 PM

Last week you all assisted me with a bad starter solenoid. Now a different problem, but same boat

I have my friends 20' Seacraft with a 225' Evinrude. he has in the past not used his boat very often and this Spring he had to have the Carbs cleaned. After that we went out on the boat and all seemed to work fine. The boat has not been used since. The boat has about 3/4 of a tank of gas and there is no telling how old the fuel is, but I know it is a least a year old.

Today, I took the boat for a ride. It cranks and idles fine, but when I push the throttle down is seems rather sluggish and is slow to plain at the lower speed and then cruises fine. At WOT (engine trimmed) the engine will spin 5000rpm, but the speed is only about 38mph, where is should be 50+.

Back at the dock I pulled the carb cover and played with the throttle under the cowling. When the throttle is advanced and then dropped back I can hear the engine cough.

My first question is what is the problem?

If it is the carbs which I think it is, my second question is: do the carbs have to be cleaned again by removing them or can a carb cleaner mixed with the fuel or sprayed into the carbs be utilized. If so, what product?

If it is something else, please recommend a solution.

thanks again. This forum has been invaluable

Eric
