SUBJECT: Thom or anyone - another rub rail replacement issue

Submitted by KenG (155.103.6.254) from NEW JERSEY on

Thanks for the advice on my rubrail replacement on my 25' W/A. One nagging issue - after I drill out the rivets and remove the bolts, remove the rail, get out the old caulk, and clean the area with acetone, I am ready to caulk. I will pry out the cap (I assume, if necessary), and squirt in 5200 between the cap and liner, probably using masking tape to keep it from sagging while it cures. Then I assume I re-drill the rivet holes through the 5200 (in the same locations they were before) and pop-rivet the rail back on. So, the issue is how do I keep water from following the rivets into the boat - coat them with silicone glue before fitting them in? Thanks, Ken.
