SUBJECT: # 27120: Johnson V-4 lower unit install

Submitted by west-end willy (208.35.252.89) from TEXAS on 3/7/05 4:23:00 PM

Hey guys,

I have a 99 Johnson 115 V-4 saltwater motor.I need some help getting my lower unit back on after I changed the water pump / impeller. I still had the shift lever in forward (like the manual said) then I stabbed the drive shaft in while slowly turning the prop and it seemed to go in OK. After I buttoned it up,and pulled the shift rod back out and replaced the pin, the shift lever would not go into reverse and the prop spun freely. Any suggestions? I hope I didn't bend anything. By the way the shift rod had a slight forward bend toward the end with the hole when I removed it. It's been 20 years since I've done this, and every outboard is a little different.

Try rolling the flywheel or bump the starter a few times while you shift it.. There shouldn't be problem unless you had the shifter rod unscrewed and out and didn't get back in at the same adjustment height. It's critical to 1/32".. Each turn is about that much.

I'll give it a try, I did not touch the shift rod, so the length should be fine. Thanks again.
