I'm considering a boat that has two 150HP Evinrudes, 1998. They're FICHT (or whatever they were called back then). My mechanic said forget about the boat based on the above unless I'm going to repower. The seller says his engines have been serviced under the recall for those models (I haven't spoken to my mechanic about this new info). So...if they've been serviced with some "fix" after the recall, are these motors okay or should I stay away from them. Thanks in advance.

As much as I like the FICHT engines, the troublesome ones were the 1998 and 1999 150-175 series. Even with the updates they have NO trade in value. Just call any authorized dealer and ask what they will give you for that model FICHT.
If you can buy the rig just for the cost of the boat and trailer, then it could be justified, but do NOT pay anything for the engines, even though there are many still running fine, their past history only gives you a 50-50 chance.

Thanks. Actually, the price is so low it is like I'm not paying for the engines. Can I use these engines offshore with any confidence? How do I know if they're okay?

Seahorse is right about the no trade in value, but the engines don't know that. I've surveyed lots of boats with those 98-99 150/175's that are running fine. Seems to me if they live past 300hrs they will run 1500-2000hrs.

I give them a good decarboning as I describe above and then burn nothing but Bomb XD50 oil in them. Actually if they were mine I'd burn XD100 the pure synthetic just to make sure they don't carbon up and stick with the 50-75hr decarboning.. If you keep them clean inside and prop them to turn 5500-5700 at WOT there's no reason why they shouldn't live.
