SUBJECT: # 27827: 2001 Carbed 150 Mercury: Carb/choke problems

Submitted by Charlie (98.194.41.142) from ALABAMA on 8/25/2007 10:06:00 PM

Went to start the motor this morning so I primed it with the bulb and tried to start it. It would start but die almost immediately, smoking like crazy. I smelled raw gas so I pulled to cowling and noticed that the bottom carb was squirting gas every time I pumped the bulb from a little brass vent just above the carb opening. These are two little brass dohickies (vents or jets?) with a small hole in the them. The one over the left carb opening (throat) is smaller than the one over the right carb throat. When I pumped the bulb, fuel would squirt out. I dried it up, the attempted to start the motor...which it fired up. About 15 seconds of running, fuel again began spurting out of the bigger jet/vent on the left side. Had to shut it down.

Just above those little brass openings, there is a small hose attached to the carb bodys...it cascades down from the top carb, to the second carb and down to the last or bottom carb (where these little squirting vents are). The hose then goes to the back of the engine and attached to a hose barb coming off a brass fitting on the starboard head. I pulled this off but it looked like a brass plug coated with a clear heavy grease...I did not see any hole or anyway that it would pull a vaccuum, etc...it looked solid. I dont have a clue what that dohickie is either!

Can anyone tell me what might be wrong with this engine? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks..........Charlie

Sounds like you have a sticking float bowl in the lower carb and that is allowing raw gas to flood out. Works the same way the float in your toilet works. If it sticks the gas keeps filling when you pump the bowl. Sounds like it may be time to rebuild the carbs. You could try to drain the bowl and refil it with some carb cleaner and let it stand overnight. There should be a brass hex plug to drain the bowl then remove the fuel line at the carb and squirt some cleaner in there till it flows out. Let it sit then drain again and try introducing fresh gas to start.
