In the process of refinishing an old Aquasport . I just finished putting a gel coat product from west marine on the transom.problem is : I would like to add a second coat. Can I rough this surface and wipe it with acetone or is there something else I need to do ? Also what is the best way to apply the gel coat with out using a spray system? Thanks in advance for any help. Hope the board comes back to life. I appreciate the serious contributors.

FreeOnBoard from TX says I used styrene thinner and a regular 1 in. paint brush
David, I've done that a few times but never over an area larger than about half a sq. ft., so you may want to adjust the brush size accordingly. As you suggest, roughing with sandpaper for adhesion and scrubbing with acetone to make sure there's no PVA or wax additive on the surface should be sufficient preparation. Don't know where you can find styrene thinner, other than doing a search on the internet. The place I got my last bottle has gone out of business, and the local West Marine doesn't carry it. Seems odd, considering that styrene is the only thinner I've seen recommended for gel coat. I use an eyedropper to repeatedly add a little thinner, then mix it in and test the brushing and self-leveling characteristics on a board. When I'm satisfied that it's brushing about right, I mix in the catalyst and apply with a clean brush. Despite my best efforts, or maybe because of them, I never get a flawless finish and usually have to fill in a few indentations, then finish with progressively finer sandpaper. Good luck.
