SUBJECT: # 27854: '83 3 cylinder 70 hp evinrude does not idle

Submitted by Tex Mex (64.216.84.91) from TEXAS on 10/28/2007 10:27:00 AM

It starts Ok as usual but as soon as you lay down the fast idle handle, it sputters and then dies. I cleaned the carbs inside & out, and replaced spark plugs, still same problem. What could it be? Thanks

Sounds like an air leak to me, maybe gasket under one of the carberators or a loose hose sucking air somewhere. If you choke it a little and it keeps running, you have an air leak, too lean.

my old motor has bad compression, and won't idle. I just adjusted the throttle linkage at the motor. It now idles at 1200 rpms. It may not be real good for the lower unit when I put her in gear, but she is on her last legs, and it works for me.
