SUBJECT: # 27857: fly wheel removal

Submitted by DavidRPa. (72.79.158.164) from PENNSYLVANIA on 11/22/2007 8:23:00 PM

Dunk ,It's encouraging to know you are still around. Otherwise , I am in the process of redoing the ignition and control wiring on a 78 merc 900. I have the Shop manual for this and motors thru 1985. I want to pull the stator out to inspect the insulation jacket on the leads and the stator housing . The manual does not clearly give any proceedure on fly wheel removal for this particular yr. I am down to the flyWheel nut and I would appreciate from you and ,or, any of the other contributors, a quick run down on safely removing this nut and the flywheel. I don't want to take any chances on doing unnecessary damage. Thanks in adance for the help you all have been and for any in the furture.I hope I can return the help some time for some one. David

Remove the nut with an air or electric impact wrench. Next if you don't have or can borrow a flywheel puller you can use a steering wheel puller. Remove some of the 5/16" bolts, attach the puller, tighten up the puller and hit the puller bolt with a hammer. Tighten up some more if needed and hit again. You will have to get some longer bolts and make sure they're grade 5 or 8's.
