Thanks to FreeOnBoard for the help. I went ahead and ordered the water pump rebuild kit and a starting solenoid that had cracked apart...Then I went looking for the thermostat? I pulled off the shroud that covered the source of the tell tail. I cannot seem to find an access for a thermostat. Is It possible that this design motor does not use a thermostat in the cooling loop? I am feeling puzzled and before I cause more of a problem that I solve. Can you help me figure this out.

FreeOnBoard from TX says Don't think it has a thermostat
David, I'll check the maintenance manual tonight (if I can find it), but now seem to recall that the larger Mercs back then ran without thermostats. You can see some parts diagrams here: http://ishopmarine.com/ishop/jsp/AsplIsmHomeCcat.jsp?&lvlCode=2&pCode=M0000989&path=MM~A0000001~M0000989&isFromCMS=false&hideAdd2CartButton=&isStandAlone=&is4CmsShop=&reqln=Unknown&reqem=Unknown&reqph=Unknown&reqFor=29&req4Browse=1&docId=&docName=&isForSupStore=false&cCatFilter=&eCatSupFldr= that may verify that also. Also, doing a Google search on "Mercury 900 outboard" will show some message boards with more relevant info. To answer a question from your first post, I ran mine on earmuffs without any problems, up to a fast idle; but for sure, the impeller will melt pretty quickly if it's run dry (voice of experience).
