'88 Johnnyrude 120hp with an OMC control; getting very hard to shift and advance the throttle. I'm pretty sure I took it apart and lubed it when the new powerhead was installed 7 years ago, but can't remember the particulars. Just wondering if anyone knows of an easy method. Also posting this on the Boats & Motors board. Thanks.

RNuts #12938 from AL says I took mine apart before but that was not it.........
Turned out that the cables needed replacing. This was on a 81 140. I ended up breaking some of the inside components of the shifter because it was the cables that were old and the lub in them had dried. I was amazed when I installed the new cables, how bad the old ones were.

FreeOnBoard from TX says Thanks, RNuts, I'm reaching the same conclusion
Despite poor light and poorer memory, managed to find the screw that holds the plastic cover plate, then worked enough slack in the cables to see the inside of the control. Eventually disconnected the cables at both ends and found that nothing in the motor or in the control is binding, but with the cables hooked up it sure is stiff. This is one of those things that has been getting gradually worse for several years, but I didn't pay any attention to it until somebody else was driving the boat last weekend and he commented on it. These are 20 year old cables, so it may be time for a change. Sure would be nice if a grease fitting could be added like you can do with steering cables.

FreeOnBoard from TX says Amazing results with new cables
While waiting for the cables I ordered last week, jury rigged a grease gun so it would force a mixture of ATF and lithium grease into the old cables. Never did get as much as I wanted in there, but they loosened up a lot. Over the weekend, took the control box completely apart, cleaned off all the old, dried grease, polished a couple of aluminum bearing surfaces that were visibly galling, and re-lubed everything with fresh grease and graphite. Smooth as silk without the motor attached, but together about as stiff as before. The new cables arrived yesterday, installed them last night, and it works like a dream now.
