SUBJECT: # 27916: Corroded shock mounts on ’88 Evinrude 120hp

Submitted by FreeOnBoard from TEXAS on 10/29/2008 11:53:00 AM

Had to remove the powerhead and midsection to replace a bad megaphone gasket, so thought I would take a look at the lower shock mounts. Turns out that years of salt water exposure had penetrated the rubber mounts and corroded the internal aluminum wedges almost completely to white powder; a really convincing demonstration of galvanic corrosion between metal and carbon-impregnated rubber. New shock mounts are available from several sources, but I suspect they’re made of the same materials and will eventually have the same problem. Has anyone seen this problem and do you know if there is a corrosion-resistant shock mount available? Thanks for any info. Have also posted this on the Boats/Motors board.
