SUBJECT: # 27928: foam in stringers

Submitted by David R (72.70.203.132) from PENNSYLVANIA on 3/14/2009 7:18:00 PM

After removing the deck to replace the fuel tank on a 1973-222 Aqua sport hull . I cleaned up the entire bilge to inspect for any problem areas. There are two huge stringers running fore and aft. Upon close inspection I found these to be filled with a dense foam. Question is : Is this foam there to act as floatation ? or put there as a form to build the glass stringers on. Thanks for any input. David R.

The potential flotation is insignificant to the function of the stringers. The stringer are integral to the integrity of your hull and should not be altered in any way.

You wouldn't add floation to your hull by adding additional stringers...
