SUBJECT: # 27940: Do 1 cylinder engines shake too much?

Submitted by deepdrop (75.69.134.198) from NEW HAMPSHIRE on 9/4/2009 5:55:00 PM

I have a 10'6" Sea Eagle inflatable. I've been using a 30 lb thrust Minn Kota which works well but we move pretty slowly. I've looked far and wide for a used 2 stroke and finally have given up on that. They are too old and too expensive. Also, I don't know if the parts supply will continue.

A 10 hp 4 stroke would get me on plane, but they weigh over 80 lbs. A 6 hp weighs 50 lbs, but won't get me on plane. I'm trying to decide between the two and would welcome anyone's advice. One question I have is whether the 6 hp shakes a lot, since it's a one cylinder engine. I've been looking at the Tohatsu/Nissan engines.

Thanks for any advice or suggestions.

A single cylinder is going to shake more than a twin but on a rubber boat I just don't know. If it were mine I'd go for a black 9.9 2 stroke at about 77 pounds. A 2 stroke will probable be lighter and provide more speed.
