SUBJECT: # 9644: fresh water cooling..DUNK?

Submitted by Capt. Len (199.60.231.84) from Canada on 4/14/99 12:53:00 AM

My 93 merccruiser has fresh water cooling but the manifolds are raw water cooled. Why is this and can i change this to fresh water? There must be a reason or merc would do this. It is a 350 cheve with bravo 2 leg.

Can you tell.... Really SD's are not forte. From what I understand there is a full fresh water kit that can be installed. The reason it's that way is cause you or somebody didn't order it that way. I think before your done converting it for the price, you'd be better off just figure replacing the risers you have now, when they need it.

You need a special riser gasket, a 160 thermostat, and you need to move some hoses. I have the full system on my boat and it works fine.
  3. 4/15/99 1:40:00 AM JimN (206.173.232.121) from CALIFORNIA says Bill's right
Len, You have what is called a 'half system'. The price difference is about $75-100 between the two. As Bill said the upgrade is not difficult. As far as replacing the manifold and risers when they need it... figure $500-700 an engine for that assuming that you haven't lost the engine when they failed. The FWC full kit new is only ~$650. Make the change. Good luck with it, Jim
