SUBJECT: # 9650: Looking for another boat

Submitted by TunaHelper (207.132.233.103) from MARYLAND on 4/14/99 8:59:00 AM

Well, after all of the help you guys gave me, I bought that Robalo only to find out that the transom was cracked under a strategically placed piece of trim, and the wood was rotted from rainwater. The seller guaranteed me that the boat was 100% seaworthy, so I had the guy give back my 15K. Too bad, it was otherwise a really nice boat. Anyhow to make a long story short, I'm still looking.

I want an offshore W/A or express that is fish rigged in the 24' to 26' range with a trailer. I really like Gradys, Robalos and Albemarles. Probably from the early 80's to fit my budget. I want to spend about 15-16K and I have the cash and am ready to buy. If anyone can help me find such a boat in the Maryland area drop me an email, it would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You are lucky to get your money back. Usually it's buyer beware. You are not going to get a 24-26 in great shape for that kind of money. Maybe try a 22 grady, and if you are not sure how to check out a boat get a survey. Good Luck in your search!!

You can just about count on all sterns on outdrives and some outboards over 5 years old to be wet, very seldom will you find one that is dry. This does not come from rain water. Make sure your surveyor uses a moisture meter, or removes screws from stern, I have only found 2 sterns that were dry, and I belive both were low use boats stored on land a large part of the time

Bert, thanks for the info. This boat actually was a dry stored boat. In fact, it hadn't been in the water at all for 1.5 years. the reason I say that it was rainwater is this. Saltwater does not rot wood, it preserves it. The wood in this transom, I could dig out with my finger. The fiberglass on transom itself was physically broken at the top, leaving a gap large enough for me to fit 2 fingers in, and the trim panel that covers it was not caulked to keep water out. Thanks for the tip on outboard transoms though I do appreciate it.

Try www.traderonline.com. There may be some boats in your area and price available. If not, you will get an idea of the market and availability. Happy hunting!
