SUBJECT: # 9651: Cupping or cupped prop blades
Submitted by
Gary (143.165.201.50) from NEW YORK on 4/14/99 10:15:00 AM
In my quest to learn and increase my overal boating/mechanical knowledge and for me it is a diffcult almost mythical journey I read about cupped prop blades. It seems that cupped prop blades decrease RPMs if I read the article correctly - that sounds like a negative- there must be a corresponding positive, any ideas from you guys, oh by the way as long as I gotcha how about explaining what rake is in a similar context thanks Gary.

Darrell_F (130.41.66.249) from FLORIDA says cupping props
I just bought new props and changed from a 3 blade to a 4 blade so I had to learn a little about props. Cupping is changing just the edge of the blade while pitch applies to the angle of the entire prop blade. There are standard amounts of cupping that can be applied. It can have an effect similar to adding additional pitch. It could be much as 2" of pitch so it can result in lowering the rpm if everything else is the same. The main reason for cupping is not to raise or lower rpm but to reduce prop slippage or cavitation on higher rpm props.

Geoff (169.132.59.14) from NEW JERSEY says Darrell F.....a question
Darrell-
I have a few questions I'd like to ask someone with first hand experience with 4 bladed wheels?
Could you be kind enough to email me so I could contact you...email above is not valid.
Thanks in advance,
Geoff
